Mindset Shift of the Week – Create Space
Your environment, for good or bad, can impact your attitude, emotions, thoughts, and actions.
For example, imagine coming home after a long day at work.
It’s your night to cook dinner, so with groceries in hand, you open the door and enter into a world of chaos.
Your children are screaming and fighting over a game and your dogs have torn up the sofa. Anyone would be upset.
Conversely, your inner landscape, or attitude impacts your environment.
In our example, you’re understandably upset, but instead of screaming at everyone (dogs included) you take a deep breath and instead of reacting, you take calm decisive actions.
You set the groceries down, put the dogs outside, take the game away and send everyone to their rooms. Then you collapse onto the ripped sofa. It’s a leap, but you understand my point.
Currently, we are living through a cycle of tremendous change which is making most people anxious and afraid.
In the paper I mentioned by Dr. Rogers, he was concerned about the atomic age and how scientific advances threatened human-centered creativity. We’re having similar conversations today about AI.
Some imagine that AI will completely remake the economy and depending on where you stand, this is a frightening prospect.
But you still need to go to work and carry on. You need focus and clarity. You need some mental space before taking any action, thereby having a positive impact on your environment.
Try this:
When a worry thought comes into your mind, notice it, take a deep breath and ask yourself, “Is that happening now?” or “Do I need to think about this now?”
You’ll be amazed at how many fearful thoughts have little to do with what’s actually happening in your day-to-day world.
Of course, some thoughts are things you need to take care of right away. Some you can pick up again later. And others are fantasy’s you can let go.
